Lyon, France – Nuits Sonores returns to Lyon for its 21st edition from May 7th to 12th, 2024. This renowned festival is a must-visit for any fan of electronic music, showcasing a diverse range of genres and pushing the boundaries of creativity.
The Grand locos the main Venue is really a terrific venue! absolutely perfect for a dance music festival
Wednesday Laurent Garnier for an opener was excellent (as always) very psychedelic and great rhythms, he is really masterful and we found the crowd hyper cool. We prefer Laurent Garnier on the big stages like this he really knows how to make the atmosphere as ravey as possible.
Thursday at Heat / H7 for the early afternoon party was terrific for Camion Bazar and others, Thursday was good at the main venue, but not like Wednesday with Laurent Garnier, the crowd was much younger Anetha b2b Young Marco and I Hate Models seemed to please the crowd but we found it to be quite commercial / Instagram influenced Hard Techno (that really isn’t very hardcore just fast) and we found the end of the I Hate Models set very cheesy
Friday was good, with a few exceptions. Both the sets by Fatboy Slim (you can see his set here YouTube video, but it’s a real waste of time) and Skrillex, who were the most popular acts of the Festival, were way weaker than we ever imagined. (We understand the economics of a huge festival like Nuits Sonores and how these pop acts attract huge crowds (a positive) and help pay for the better, more artistic DJs.) The difference between these pop acts and some of the truly great underground acts, like Jennifer Cardini (check out the video below) who really knows how to create the right ambiance, was crystal clear.
We also really enjoyed Gabber Eleganza Presents “The Hakke Show.” It was a lot of fun. It was a great look back to the early 90s English rave scene. The dancers were terrific!
Afterward, we went to La Sucrière for LB aka LABAT. La Sucrière is an excellent club! It’s huge with a very strong and clear sound system. The DJ booth is in the middle of an enormous dancefloor, and there are no screens! It was a welcome relief from the overwhelming blast of light from the stages that has become the norm.
Saturday Ryoji Ikeda (live) impressed with incredibly artistic video and experimental sounds. He maintained a humble and efficient stage presence. Canblaster (live) delivered a great set with a more ambient mood – we need to hear more from him! (Check out the video below.)
The too-short but fantastic set by Richie Hawtin was a real gem again. This reinforces the point that experience matters – the crowds are way better for veteran DJs. The people who come to see them are real fans, not rookies.
After that, we went to H7 for Rrose and Tommy 47. Rrose’s live set was weird and wonderful, but definitely not for everyone. She creates a wonderfully bizarre and indescribable atmosphere, almost like creating new emotions for the dancefloor – a real trip. Tommy 47 was very rhythmic and danceable, while still being artistic, creative, and underground. H7 is a great club, but the lightshow was painfully bright, ruining the atmosphere. Seriously, Lyon clubs – bright is bad!
Sunday was very strong Ben Klock b2b DVS1 closed the festival beautifully. They played at the same time as Âme b2b Marcel Dettmann b2b Solomun for 5 hours. We danced to that at the beginning. It was fine, but we find Solomun generally slow and lugubrious. The figurative videos were slightly better than Fatboy Slim’s videos but still spectacularly horrendous. We are not sure why Marcel Dettmann is playing b2b with these 2. From our perspective, it isn’t working for anything other than his personal finances.
3 Hours Ben Klock b2b DVS1 no screens, no hands in the air histrionics just pure expertly mixed techno. They made the 3 ‘stars’ playing on the big stage seem like a boring Las Vegas sideshow. Their set was one of the best of the 5-day festival. It was as good as, if not better than, Laurent Garnier. That is saying a lot.
