3 of 5 peace of minds
Went to essaim (swarm in English), a wonderfully unpretentious neighborhood club in Paris – for a night with Rene Wise. We’d been looking forward to it, and while it might not go down in history as an “all-time spectacular,” it was precisely the kind of good night out we needed, and exactly why we love supporting these smaller local music events.
The buzz around Rene Wise has been growing, and for good reason. His productions have a certain undeniable groove, and his DJ sets are known for their intricate layering and driving rhythms. At this essaim, he certainly delivered on the latter. The music was, without a doubt, great. From start to finish, the excellent sound system thrummed with a steady flow of expertly mixed tracks – a blend of hypnotic techno and subtle, pulsing house that kept the energy consistently high. There were moments of pure sonic bliss, where the crowd moved as one, lost in the intricate soundscapes Rene Wise so skillfully crafted.
So why “good but not spectacular”? Perhaps it was the expectations, or maybe just the particular vibe of the night. There wasn’t that transcendent, goosebump-inducing moment that occasionally elevates a good set to an unforgettable one. No unexpected drops that sent shivers down your spine, no dramatic shifts in tempo that took the room by surprise. It was a well-executed, solid set, but it felt, at times, a touch predictable.
But “predictable” isn’t a bad word when you’re talking about a reliable good time. And the true joy of the evening wasn’t just about Rene Wise’s set; it was about everything else. It was about stepping into essaim. The gathering felt more like a community living room than a grand performance hall. It’s the kind of place where you recognize faces from around the block. The bar staff knows your order. The air vibrates with an easygoing camaraderie. In a city like Paris, larger and more commercial venues often dominate the nightlife scene. Yet, these smaller, more intimate gatherings are the heartbeat of their neighborhoods.
We were genuinely happy to support essaim. These independent events are the lifeblood of local music scenes, providing platforms for both established and emerging artists, and fostering a unique atmosphere that simply can’t be replicated in a superclub. They take risks, they nurture talent, and they offer a more intimate connection between artist and audience. Every ticket bought, every drink ordered, directly contributes to keeping these vital spaces alive.
Rene Wise’s set at this Paris essaim in May 2025 might not be etched into our memories. It was not an earth-shattering revelation. Still, it was a very enjoyable night of great music in a comfortable, local setting. And sometimes, that’s more than enough. It’s about the shared experience. It’s about the vibrant community. It’s the simple pleasure of good tunes on a good night out, right in our own neighborhood. We’ll be back, and we’ll keep supporting these essential small music events.
After a longer than anticipated disco nap, we finally made it to see Rene Wise in Paris. The music was solid, the local spot was cozy, and we burned a few calories. It was all about supporting that neighborhood vibe and maximum local love.
