A DVS1 set is intense experience No drops, no stops – just pure techno. DVS1 doesn’t stop mixing for the entire three hours. You won’t see any hands in the air, no posing for selfies Instagram or TikTok moments. It’s just proper, fucking techno. Amen
DVS1 is always mixing expertly, the whole time. It’s super rare to hear him just play one record; he’s constantly blending tracks and is incredibly skilled at it. You can clearly tell this man has serious experience and he has been listening to dance music for decades. Experience matters.
Sometimes weirdly he’ll throw in some epic, more progressive stuff, it won’t last long. It is just a transitional tool and an opportunity to catch your breath, like the way Sasha does. He’s a master at mixing complex rhythms and creating these really interesting polyrhythms, which really gives his sets a distinctive personality. Some people say there aren’t any big surprises, like you’d get for example with an excellent Laurent Garnier or Marcel Dettmann set (that we love). And that’s a real plus + but can be slightly monotonous – we think that’s good! but not for everyone – its like a real psychedelic experience you need to be strong (pussies go home).
There is a feeling with DVS1’s unique sound. He is really an outstanding mixer. He is fully concentrated on giving the audience his full attention to the mixing board. His sets are about as far from mainstream EDM as you can get. And that is a good thing.
The sound is excellent at essaim. It’s a small place. I think the capacity is about 400. The sound is rich and powerful from anywhere on the dance floor. The lights are very minimalistic with no stroboscopic effect and the fog is graceful.
One criticism is that the lighting is too bright that seems to be the trend at the moment in most clubs we go to in Europe so it’s not unusual – but it is important to remember we live in the dark
To properly experience the Tyndall effect of the fog the brightness of the lighting needs to be more subtle and lower (darker). The Tyndall effect is the scattering of light by particles in a colloid. These particles make the light visible. They also make it more psychedelic, for example, seeing the patterns in your mind’s eye. This happens because these particles are large enough to scatter light waves, especially shorter wavelengths like blue.
essaim Is a small and intimate basement place with a small smoking area. Still, we’re becoming a little bit spoiled with the recent opening of Mia Mao and FVTVR in Paris. These places have huge outdoor areas. It’s easier to spend five to ten hours at a club if you can be outside at times. essaim is more claustrophobic. However, it has the vibe of a real club because the crowd is there only to dance. This makes the vibe much cooler than some of the commercial clubs that have opened in Paris.
A night with DVS1 at essaim is pure, unadulterated techno. The music is expertly mixed by a seasoned wizard who is fully dedicated to the craft. Forget the frills and distractions. This experience is about losing yourself in the relentless polyrhythms. It is an intimate space with a crowd that gets it. essaim lacks the sprawling outdoor areas of some newer Parisian spots. Its focus on the music and the dance floor creates a vibe that’s authentic. It’s seriously cool. If you want a genuine techno experience, see DVS1 play at a place like essaim. It offers a sound stripped down to its essential core. Just leave your insta-selfie ass at the door.
